IT is a pleasant privilege to present the following monograph to the profession and the public, for there is no discussion which is more fundam&tal to the interpretation and reform of current teach ing than this statement of the functions of inter est and effort in education. Its active acceptance bteachers would bring about a complete trans formation of classroom methods. Its appreciation by the patrons of the schools would greatly modify current criticism of the various programs of educational reform. The worth of this pre scutation is well summarized in the statement that, if teachers and parents could know inti mately only one treatise on educational proce dure, it is greatly to be doubted that any other could be found which would, within small com pass, so efi'ectively direct them to the points of view, the attitudes of mind, and the methods of work which are essential to good teaching.

This is an interesting piece on the philosophy behind the connection between interest and effort in education. The book is short and difficult to read at times. Dewey's language is somewhat dated and requires concentration in order to get everything from the work. However, his basic ideas still ring true and there are some sections of the book which are worthy to return to as we continue to consider the importance of having kids "engaged" and "active" in our classrooms. Dewey drives at the root necessity of having actively engaged students but cautions against activity for the sake of activity. The distinction is fine, but worthy of sincere reflection and consideration. This book is a reprint of a book taken from a library. As such, the text size is uneven and there are unreadable notes in some margins. However, I was unable to find this work in any other format.Product details
