London, 1898

Lord Benedict Yeats has two obsessions.

One of which has a definite pulse – the seductive and beautiful Evander St John, Duke of Casterwell. A man he has a certain history with.

A man who tells Benedict that he has spent too long amongst sand and dead things. He might not be wrong. Casterwell’s world is one of sexual sophistication and games that Benedict cannot hope to match.

But when Benedict returns from working on a famous dig in Cairo, Casterwell invites him to a country house party that will change his life. An Egyptologist of growing renown, Benedict will also catalogue the famous Casterwell collection of antiquities.

And almost certainly, will become one of Casterwell’s string of lovers. But will he be the one to break through that glittering façade? Or will the scars of Casterwell’s dark, bloody past and his complex and fiercely deceptive private life tear them apart?

Warning Contains two men wildly obsessed, a lust too long denied, hot m/m sex between a naive Egyptologist and one very determined duke, and absolutely no cursed tombs. Approx. 56000 words.

Objects Of His Obsession edition by Jae T Jaggart Literature Fiction eBooks

The writing was absolutely wonderful -- the author gave us a romance, well-written, evocative, descriptive, hot sex scenes and used action and words to tell the story.

The first speaker -- Benedict -- is well-conceived and we understand his obsessions, his fears, his goals quite well. The other main character -- Evander -- remains a mystery even when the pov shifts and we hear/see into him. Sadly, there is a largely opaque veil that prevents the reader (as well as Benedict) from understanding him. While Benedict's failure to understand Evander is part and parcel of the internally driven conflict inherent in many a romance novel, in this case, the continuing opacity left me unsatisfied.

I truly have no idea why Evander loved Benedict, why he took one look at him when he was in college and knew he was 'the one', especially with no subsequent contact. While Benedict's obsession with Evander is clearly justified with descriptions of his longing for the attractive, confident, intelligent Evander, there is little explanation of why Evander took one look while passing each other on the street and then spent years assuming Benedict was 'the one' without doing anything about it. The few lines in which Evander muses that his life successes were dependent upon him following his instincts were insufficient to make me truly believe that he was in love, rather than lust, with Benedict.

The book is a good read if you are prepared to fill in the blanks yourself in regards to Evander.

Objects Of His Obsession edition by Jae T Jaggart Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Jae T. Jaggart is gifted in the art of storytelling. Rarely have I come across a book in which the act of reading it felt so personal, as if I were in the same room as the author, a parlor perhaps, comfortably furnished with softly-worn leather armchairs, a crackling fire for warmth allowing just enough light in the darkness as she spins her tale. Objects of His Obsession is such a book.

With rich prose and a distinct writing style, this is not a quick read. It's meant to be enjoyed, savored. Highly descriptive sentence structures meander along at a leisurely pace, not unlike the great Nile River herself. The use of this particular voice wouldn't work to the same effect in a contemporary romance, but it's a perfect match for Benedict and Evander's Victorian love story. The two share a romance, often erotic, yet at times quite sweet, during a time when the discovery of one's homosexuality would mean a ruined reputation and a very real risk to their safety. Impressive characterization endeared me to not only the main couple, but a secondary duo as well.

By the time I reached the last chapters I was desperate for some semblance of a happy ending, be it thoroughly resolved or even bittersweet for the Duke of Casterwell and his mad Egyptologist.

I was not disappointed.
To be the first to write a review is pretty binding. You can make it or break it and I certainly hope won't do the latter.
The story is set at the end of the Victorian era when moral codes that were allegedly set by Prince Albert tied people with tight reins. And that backdrop fits the story very well. On the surface it seems to be story about Benedict and his obsessions, but for me it is equally, or perhaps even more, about Evander. Most of all it is about love.
Benedict is in some ways still very naive. He has been living most of the time past few years among dead things in a country with even more conservative morals than Victorian England. He sees (initially) only what is meant to be seen.
Evander (and his wife) does his best to outwit the conventions and get what he wants, what he needs. He had met society's expectations about marriage, kids and all that, but he needs love. It is something only a bit skittish, but for him a very attractive, man can give him.
To start with the author leaves us guessing what Evander is thinking, feeling, wishing for. We follow Benedict while he is fighting with his moral code, his ethical issues, his feelings, all that while Evander is an enigma. But underneath it all cool exterior he is as vulnerable as Benedict.
All in all, this was a beautiful love story that began with love at first sight and was fulfilled by a very purposeful man. I shed some tears reading this book. I do not have much experience with m/m books, but reading about the sex did not bother me.
I hope I did not spoil reading for others, but I recommend this book.
I had some small problems with editing, mostly single quotes that were missing and mixed up names.
This started off feeling a little bit Mills & Boon with language like 'honeyed eyes'...but then it started reminding me of Anne Rice's 'The Mummy' and I loved it. The lack of communication between heroes is frustrating at first but does make sense for the characters and their times and later it just added to the anticipation of their next meeting. The secondary characters, especially Juliana, are vivid and Ben's reluctance to betray her is completely believable. Evander and Juliana's relationship is really enjoyable and gave Evander's character a sweetness and humour.
The book was okay, and I definitely liked that the characters had different interests, personalities, and the dialogue was decently written. This author seriously needs a good editor. The book was riddled, and I do mean riddled, with POV switches, repetitive phrases (seriously, if I have to read "his turquoise eyes" or "his honey brown eyes" ever again, I might put something sharp through my eye), and even a couple of typos. I did love the idea of the married couple in the book truly loving one another and wanting to stay together for their family even though they weren't romantically involved. There's definitely more than one way to have a family, and I liked reading that in a historical context.
